Kiprop Kipngok Breaks SEC Record, Wins Gold on Day Two of SEC Championships

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Another day, another record for the Cats.

The Kentucky Wildcats track and field team concluded day two of the SEC Outdoor Championships today at the UK Outdoor Complex, earning their first gold medal of the week and sending seven prelim qualifiers to their respective finals.

The highlight of day two for the Wildcats came in the day’s final event, as freshman sensation Collins Kiprop Kipngok claimed the first gold medal of his young career in the men’s 3000m steeplechase final. Kiprop Kipngok broke the SEC Championship meet record, as well as the UK Outdoor Facility record, with an 8:26.33 time, adding the first points of the meet to the men’s overall score.

Alexis Glasco and Emmi Scales were the first to advance to their final event at the top of the day, qualifying for the women’s 100m hurdles final tomorrow night, finishing fourth and fifth with times of 13.00 and 13.06. Both Glasco and Scales tied their personal-best times in a Kentucky uniform.

The women’s 1500m prelims saw two more Wildcats advance to tomorrow’s slate of finals, with freshman star Janet Jepkemboi Amimo finishing the event atop the leadboard with a 4:17.59 mark. Ally Kruger was the second Wildcat to qualify for the 1500m final with a personal-best 4:20.01 time. In the men’s edition of the 1500m, Ed Bird advanced to tomorrow’s final by placing second with a 3:45.70 time.

The women’s 400m and 100m prelims featured the final two Wildcat qualifiers on day two of the SEC Championships, seeing Alysia Johnson (W 400m) and Sharmelle Holmes (W 100m) advance to their respective finals.

The SEC Outdoor Championships will conclude tomorrow with a full slate of championship events, starting for the Wildcats at 4 p.m. EST with Sophie Galloway and Aliyah Adams featuring in the women’s triple jump final. The men’s 4x400m relay final will cap off the final day of champ week in Lexington tomorrow at 9:40 p.m. EST.
